Facts Around the World: Turkey
Mimi Barre and Madeleine Schamehorn took The Redlands Daily Facts to Turkey recently.
Inspired by Daily Facts travel columnist Ilene Cox's articles about Turkey, the mother and daughter team visited Turkish Baths to study the techniques, services, and history of Hamams. Mimi, owner of International Day Spa, is writing protocol and training Hydro therapists to perform the ancient rituals.
Madeleine is an ESL teacher at UC Riverside. She has several students and co-workers from Turkey. The duo visited her students who were home on vacation as well as friends and families of co-workers. Madeleine is a linguist and learned Turkish just for this trip.
The pair went hiking and hot air ballooning at the Fairy Chimneys, Underground Cities, and Cave areas of Cappodocia and went swimming in the warm Mediterranean Sea in the resort town of Antalya.
A highlight of the trip was soaking in the famous Thermal Water Spas in the city of Bursa. The World Travelers said that they never tire of Istanbul, even after several visits. The ancient city straddles the Bosphorus Strait that divides the European from the Asian side of the city.
Although the getaway was primarily a business trip to bring the Turkish Bath Hamam services to Redlands, Mimi and Madeleine were "totally tourists as well as scholars for three weeks."
Mimi Barre is the owner of International Day Spa at 325 Cajon St. Redlands, CA.
